Quick Blip #9
This “Quick Blip” introduces the workability question,
“How’s that working for you?”
as a simple but powerful ACT-based clinical shortcut.
Instead of evaluating whether a client’s thoughts or behaviors are true, logical, or justified, it shifts attention to function and outcomes.
By exploring what short-term benefits a strategy provides and what long-term costs it imposes, the question increases awareness without defensiveness and opens space for choice.
It keeps clinicians oriented toward functional contextualism and behavior in context. The takeaway: when tempted to debate content, ask about workability—clients often discover for themselves what isn’t working and become more open to change.
