Table of contents

We are dedicated to improving mental health care by developing clinicians who embody the three essential dimensions of ACT:

  • Head — understanding the theory, processes, and science
  • Heart — cultivating compassion, presence, and connection
  • Hands — applying ACT skillfully and flexibly in real-world practice

Together, these dimensions reflect what it means to practice ACT in context:
not only knowing the model, but living it, using it, and evolving with it—both in and outside the therapy room.

Who We Are

Rhode Island ACT (RIACT) is a training community, residency pathway, and collaborative network for clinicians who want to deepen their work with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and contextual behavioral approaches.

We bring together therapists, supervisors, educators, and community partners who share one commitment:
to cultivate psychological flexibility—in ourselves, our clients, and our systems.

Our approach is grounded in:

  • Functional Contextualism
  • Relational Frame Theory
  • Contextual Behavioral Science
  • Idiographic, process-based clinical decision making

We believe that therapy improves most when training becomes experiential, relational, and ongoing—not theoretical, isolated, or one-and-done.

Philosophy & Alignment

Rooted in Contextual Behavioral Science. United by shared values.

We operate from a simple but powerful stance:

Behavior makes the most sense when viewed in context.
Change is most durable when aligned with values.
And the work is most meaningful when shared.

We train clinicians not just to follow protocols, but to think and practice functionally—adapting to the person in front of them rather than forcing them into a model.

What We Offer

🔹 Training & Residency

Workshops, training series, structured supervision, and a year-long ACT residency designed to bridge the gap between theory and confident practice.
Our training emphasizes skills acquisition, experiential learning, and ongoing mentorship—not just CE hours.

🔹 Collaboration & Network

Clinical growth doesn’t happen in isolation.
RIACT offers:

  • Peer consultation
  • Flex Labs (experiential skill groups)
  • Mutual referral systems
  • Professional community and mentorship

This is a place to connect, practice, and evolve alongside others doing the same work.

🔹 Business Support

Sustainable therapists serve better.
We help clinicians build practices that reflect:

  • Values-aligned business models
  • Ethical marketing and messaging
  • Private practice structure and systems
  • Community-based collaboration over competition

Our goal is to make therapy not only effective—but sustainable, ethical, and grounded.

Our Vision

Through collaboration, flexibility, and innovation, we aim to:

  • Improve therapy outcomes
  • Elevate ACT competence in our region
  • Support clinicians as whole humans
  • Build a network that grows stronger through shared knowledge and mutual support

RIACT is not just a training hub—it is a movement toward high-integrity, relational, deeply functional clinical practice.
